Landrace strains are cannabis populations that adapted over centuries to a specific place without deliberate modern breeding, such as Afghani, Hindu Kush, Durban and Acapulco Gold. Every modern strain traces back to a handful of wild, region-adapted populations. They are the genetic bedrock the entire catalogue of named strains was built from.
What a landrace is
A landrace is a stable, locally adapted population that has grown in one region long enough to develop consistent traits suited to that climate. It is “pure” in the sense of being unhybridised by modern breeding, not in any branded sense.
Where they came from
Cannabis is thought to have originated in Central Asia, and human trade and migration carried it across the world. Isolated populations then adapted to their new homes over generations.
Famous landrace regions gave their names to classic genetics: Afghani and Hindu Kush from the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, Durban from South Africa, Acapulco Gold from Mexico, Thai and Colombian lines from the tropics.
Why they matter
Nearly every commercial hybrid descends from crosses of these landraces. They are a reservoir of genetic diversity, disease resistance and unusual chemotypes that breeders return to when they want new traits.
