TERPENE
Limonene is the bright citrus note in cannabis, and one of the most studied terpenes. D-limonene smells like citrus peel because that is exactly where it is concentrated. In cannabis it is associated with uplifting, mood-brightening character.
Aroma and character
Limonene is sharp and citrusy, lemon and orange peel with a clean, zesty lift. It tends to make a chemovar smell fresh and bright rather than heavy.
What research suggests
Limonene is one of the better-studied terpenes. Preclinical and some early human work points to mood-elevating, anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects, and it is widely used and generally recognised as safe as a food flavouring. As with all terpenes, cannabis-specific human evidence is still developing.
Where else it is found
Limonene is abundant in the peels of lemons, oranges and other citrus fruit, and in juniper. It is a common natural cleaner and flavouring for the same reason it smells so clean.
