BUYING GUIDE
A cheap accurate scale improves your edibles more than any appliance. Dose is arithmetic: material weight, cannabinoid percentage, fat volume, portions. Get any one of those wrong and every batch after it is wrong in the same direction, quietly.
The four things worth owning
| Tool | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket scale | 0.01 g resolution, 100 to 200 g capacity, tare button | Sets the numerator of every dose calculation. 0.1 g resolution is enough for large batches and not enough for small ones |
| Calibration weight | Matching the scale, usually 50 g or 100 g | A scale that has never been calibrated is a random number generator with a display. Check it monthly |
| Measuring syringes or a pipette | 10 ml graduated, oil-safe | Fat is measured by volume, not weight, and a kitchen spoon is out by a lot more than people assume |
| Moulds with a known cavity volume | Silicone, volume stated per cavity | This is what converts a batch dose into a per-piece dose. A mould with an unknown cavity size makes the whole calculation unusable |
The one thing no home tool can do
Nothing you can buy for a kitchen measures potency. Home test kits give a rough colour or strip reading and are not a substitute for a laboratory assay. This matters because the largest source of error in a home edible is not the scale, it is the assumed percentage of the starting material. If you have a lab report, use its number. If you do not, assume a range rather than a figure, and dose to the top of it.
Putting the numbers together
Once you have a weight, a percentage and a volume, the arithmetic is fixed and our potency calculator does it for you. The method behind it is written out in calculating the potency of homemade edibles, and the edible dosage guide covers what to do with the answer. Losses during infusion and straining are real, so treat the calculated figure as a ceiling rather than a measurement.
Where the NOIDS Herb Lab fits
An appliance helps the accuracy problem indirectly. Because the NOIDS Herb Lab runs a fixed cycle in a marked 350 ml glass, the two variables that usually drift, temperature and volume, stay the same between batches. That is what makes a dose reproducible. It still does not tell you the potency of what you put in.
