Cannabinoid · Raw acid precursor
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the raw, non-intoxicating acid that fresh cannabis actually contains — and the direct chemical parent of THC. It does not get you high on its own because it barely binds the CB1 receptor. Heat drives off a carbon-dioxide group and converts it to Delta-9-THC, which is why decarboxylation is the single step that turns raw flower into an active edible. On a mass basis, 1000 mg of THCA yields at most about 877 mg of THC.
Decarboxylation: THCA → THC
The reaction, and why temperature matters
THCA loses a carboxyl group (as CO2) to become THC. The reaction rate rises steeply with temperature across roughly 75–150 °C. A gentle hold around 104–110 °C (220–230 °F) for 30–45+ minutes converts most THCA while protecting the THC and terpenes. Higher temperatures convert faster but are less forgiving: from about 157 °C (315 °F) THC itself begins to evaporate, so peak THC exists only briefly and overheating loses potency and aroma.
This is the chemistry behind every edible: skip decarb and your infusion carries mostly inactive THCA. See our průvodce dekarboxylací a temperature chart.
Raw use and infusion
Juicing vs infusing
Because raw THCA is non-intoxicating, some people juice or add raw cannabis to smoothies to consume the acid form. For any active edible, oil or tincture, you decarboxylate first, then infuse into fat (THCA and THC are both fat-soluble). If you infuse raw flower without decarbing, expect weak effects: you have extracted mostly THCA, not THC.
What the research shows
Human clinical evidence for THCA is limited; most data are preclinical. The best-characterised property is its decarboxylation kinetics, which have been measured directly and are the basis of the temperatures above.1 In cell and animal models, THCA has shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activity (including PPAR-gamma agonism) and anti-nausea effects, but these have ne been confirmed in controlled human trials, and no THCA medicine is approved.2 There are currently no completed pivotal efficacy trials for THCA.3
Legal and sport status
THCA sits in a legal grey zone. US federal hemp law defines legality by Delta-9-THC content, so high-THCA hemp flower has been sold on the argument that it is under the Delta-9 limit until heated — regulators increasingly test “total THC” (Delta-9 + 0.877 x THCA) to close that gap. In sport, WADA prohibits all natural and synthetic cannabinoids in competition except CBD, so THCA (and the THC it becomes) is not exempt.
Časté dotazy
Does THCA get you high? No, not in its raw form. It must be decarboxylated to THC by heat first.
Kolik THC získáte z THCA? At most about 87.7% by mass, because the molecule sheds a CO2 group. 1000 mg THCA to ~877 mg THC, before any losses.
What temperature converts THCA to THC? Around 104–110 °C (220–230 °F) for 30–45+ minutes is a good balance; above ~157 °C THC starts to evaporate.
