CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid): Specs, Evidence, Decarb & Infusion

Cannabinoid · Raw acid precursor

Non-intoxicating Decarboxylates to CBD No approved medicine Active area of research

CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the raw, non-intoxicating acid form of CBD that living and freshly harvested cannabis actually makes. Like THCA, it carries an extra carboxyl group that heat drives off, converting it to CBD. It has drawn serious research interest in its own right: in 2022, Oregon State University reported that CBDA binds the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and blocked the virus from entering human cells in the lab.

Full name
Cannabidiolic acid
Molecular formula
C22H30O4
Molar mass
358.43 g/mol
CAS number
1244-58-2
Decarboxylates to
CBD (C21H30O2, 314.46 g/mol) + CO2
Mass conversion
x0.877 — 1000 mg CBDA to ~877 mg CBD (max)
Intoxicating?
No — in either the acid or the decarboxylated form
Found in
Fresh and raw hemp/CBD-type cannabis; the dominant form before drying

Decarboxylation: CBDA → CBD

Slightly easier to convert than THCA

CBDA loses CO2 to become CBD, with the same ~0.877 mass factor: 1000 mg CBDA yields at most about 877 mg CBD. CBDA generally decarboxylates a little more readily than THCA, so a hold around 110–120 °C (230–250 °F) for 30–45 minutes is typical. As with THC, prolonged high heat degrades CBD, so gentle and complete beats hot and fast.

Raw use and infusion

Why raw juicers keep the acid

Because CBDA is non-intoxicating and some preclinical work suggests the acid form is more potent than CBD at certain targets, raw cannabis juicing deliberately preserves CBDA. For a standard CBD oil or edible you decarb first. If you want to keep CBDA, avoid heat and use cold-process infusions.

What the research shows

CBDA is one of the more actively studied acid cannabinoids, though evidence is still preclinical:

Antiviral (SARS-CoV-2). A 2022 study in the Journal of Natural Products (Oregon State University) found CBDA and CBGA bind the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and blocked cellular entry of the live virus and early variants in vitro, with a binding affinity (Kd) for CBDA of about 5.6 µM.1 This is laboratory work, not evidence that consuming hemp prevents COVID.

Anti-nausea and 5-HT1A. In animal models, CBDA is a more potent anti-emetic than CBD and acts at the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor.2

Anti-inflammatory (COX-2). CBDA selectively inhibits COX-2 in vitro, structurally resembling NSAID inhibitors.3

No CBDA medicine is approved, and these findings have not been confirmed in controlled human trials.

Legal and sport status

CBDA derived from hemp (under 0.3% Delta-9-THC) is treated like other hemp derivatives in the US and much of Europe. Note that WADA exempts only CBD from its in-competition cannabinoid ban, so CBDA is technically not exempt even though it is non-intoxicating — athletes should treat it with the same caution as any non-CBD cannabinoid.

FAQ

Is CBDA the same as CBD? No. CBDA is the raw acid precursor; heat converts it to CBD. Both are non-intoxicating.

Is CBDA stronger than CBD? At some receptor targets in animal studies (like 5-HT1A anti-nausea), CBDA appears more potent, but this has not been proven in humans.

Does CBDA cure or prevent COVID? No. A lab study showed CBDA can bind the spike protein and block viral entry in cells; that is not the same as a treatment or preventive in people.
