Cannabinoid · Raw acid precursor
CBGA (cannabigerolic acid) is the “mother cannabinoid” — the single acid the cannabis plant builds first, from which nearly every other cannabinoid is made. Plant enzymes convert CBGA into THCA, CBDA and CBCA; whatever CBGA is left over decarboxylates with heat into CBG. It is non-intoxicating, and it is one of the two cannabinoid acids shown in the lab to bind the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
The mother cannabinoid
Why almost everything starts here
Cannabis first joins two building blocks (geranyl pyrophosphate and olivetolic acid) into CBGA. Three enzymes then compete for it: THCA synthase makes THCA, CBDA synthase makes CBDA, and CBCA synthase makes CBCA. A strain’s ratio of those enzymes is largely why it turns out THC-dominant, CBD-dominant, or high in the minor cannabinoids. High-CBG strains are usually bred to stop that conversion so CBGA accumulates.
Decarboxylation and infusion
CBGA → CBG
Leftover CBGA decarboxylates to CBG with the same ~0.878 mass factor, at a gentle 110–120 °C (230–250 °F). CBGA and CBG are both fat-soluble and infuse normally. Because CBGA is non-intoxicating, it is of interest as part of a full-spectrum preparation rather than for effect on its own.
What the research shows
Direct human evidence for CBGA is limited; the notable findings are preclinical:
Antiviral (SARS-CoV-2). The same 2022 Journal of Natural Products study that flagged CBDA found CBGA binds the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and blocked cellular entry in vitro, with a binding affinity (Kd) of about 19.8 µM.1 A lab result, not evidence that hemp prevents COVID.
Metabolic signalling. CBGA has shown activity at PPAR receptors and in metabolic models in cell studies, but none of this is confirmed in humans, and no CBGA medicine is approved.2
Legal and sport status
CBGA from hemp (under 0.3% Delta-9-THC) is treated as a hemp derivative in the US and much of Europe. In sport, WADA exempts only CBD, so CBGA is not exempt despite being non-intoxicating.
FAQ
Why is CBGA called the mother cannabinoid? Because it is the single precursor the plant converts into THCA, CBDA and CBCA — the acids that become THC, CBD and CBC.
Is CBGA the same as CBG? No. CBGA is the raw acid; heat decarboxylates it to CBG. Both are non-intoxicating.
Does CBGA get you high? No.
