THCP (Tetrahydrocannabiphorol): Specs, Potency & Evidence

Cannabinoid · Phytocannabinoid (potent)

IntoxicatingNatural (trace)7-carbon side chainPreclinical

THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a natural cannabinoid, discovered in 2019, that is essentially THC with a longer seven-carbon side chain instead of THC’s five. That small change matters: in laboratory binding tests it grips the CB1 receptor far more tightly than THC. It occurs only in trace amounts in cannabis.

Full name
Tetrahydrocannabiphorol

Trace amounts in some cannabis chemotypes

Why the side chain matters

High binding affinity is not the same as being 30x stronger

The 2019 discovery paper reported THCP binds CB1 with roughly 33 times the affinity of THC in a test tube, and showed cannabimimetic effects in mice. That got reported as “THCP is 30x more potent than THC.” Affinity and real-world potency are not the same thing, and there are no controlled human potency trials, so the honest statement is: THCP is a genuinely more CB1-active molecule in the lab, and its effect in people is not yet quantified.1

Legal and sport status

THCP from hemp sits in the same grey zone as other novel cannabinoids; products marketed as THCP are common but rarely third-party verified. In sport, WADA prohibits all cannabinoids in competition except CBD, so THCP is not exempt.

FAQ

Is THCP stronger than THC? It binds the CB1 receptor much more tightly in the lab (about 33x), but that is not a measured human potency. Treat products cautiously; effects are not well characterised.

Is THCP natural? Yes, it occurs naturally in trace amounts, though most THCP on the market is concentrated or lab-made.

Does THCP get you high? Yes. It is intoxicating and acts at the same CB1 receptor as THC.
