What Is a Strain, Really?

STRAINS

GrundlagenGenetik

A strain name is a marketing label, not a guarantee. People treat strain names like product codes, but cannabis “strains” (more properly cultivars) are loosely defined and inconsistently applied. Understanding what a name does and does not promise is the first step to choosing well.

What a strain is

A strain, or cultivar, is a named cannabis variety bred for particular traits. In theory it has a consistent genetic makeup; in practice the name is unregulated, so the same “Blue Dream” can differ between growers, and a phenotype grown two ways can differ from itself.

Why names are unreliable

There is no official registry policing strain names. Sellers apply popular names for marketing, genetics drift through cloning and re-crossing, and growing conditions change the result. Two products with the same name can have different chemistry.

This is why the same strain can feel different from different sources.

What actually determines the experience

The reliable signal is Chemotyp, the plant’s cannabinoid and terpene profile, not the name or the indica/sativa label. A lab report or a trusted producer tells you more than the strain name alone.

Trust the chemotype (cannabinoid + terpene profile) over the strain name. The name is a starting point, not a spec.
