THCVA (Tetrahydrocannabivarinic Acid): Specs, Decarb & Evidence

Cannabinoid · Raw acid precursor (propyl)

Non-intoxicating (raw) Decarboxylates to THCV Rare / low-abundance No approved medicine

THCVA (tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid) is the raw acid that decarboxylates into THCV, the propyl analog of THC. It is a minor, low-abundance cannabinoid found mainly in certain African and Asian landrace strains. Direct research on THCVA itself is minimal; the scientific interest sits with its decarboxylated product, THCV, which is studied for appetite and metabolic effects.

Full name
Tetrahydrocannabivarinic acid (THCVA-A)

Some African/Asian landraces; usually a trace component

Decarboxylation and infusion

THCVA → THCV

Like the other acids, THCVA loses CO2 with heat, at roughly 110–120 °C, to become THCV. Because it is a propyl (shorter side-chain) cannabinoid, THCV tends to have a slightly higher activation temperature than THC in practice. Both are fat-soluble and infuse normally, but THCVA is rarely present in enough quantity to target on purpose.

What the research shows

On THCVA directly: very little. There are no controlled human trials of THCVA, and its pharmacology is largely uncharacterised beyond its role as the biosynthetic precursor to THCV.1 We flag that plainly rather than dress a trace acid up as a breakthrough.

On THCV (its decarb product): THCV has been studied for appetite suppression and glycaemic control, with some early human data. If you are looking for the pharmacology, it is on the THCV page, not here.2

Legal and sport status

THCVA from hemp (under 0.3% Delta-9-THC) is treated as a hemp derivative. In sport, WADA exempts only CBD, so THCVA and THCV are not exempt.

FAQ

Is THCVA psychoactive? No in its raw form. Its product THCV is only mildly psychoactive, mostly at high doses.

What does THCVA turn into? THCV, by decarboxylation with heat.

Is there research on THCVA? Very little directly; the studied compound is THCV.
