Choosing Cannabis Strains by Effect

STRAINS

EffectsPractical

Choose by chemistry and dose, not by the indica/sativa label. If strain names are unreliable, how do you choose? The honest answer is to read the chemotype, the cannabinoid ratio and the dominant terpenes, and to respect dose, because the same plant can feel different at different amounts.

Start with the cannabinoid ratio

The THC:CBD balance sets the baseline. High-THC, low-CBD tends to be more intoxicating; balanced or CBD-forward profiles are gentler and less likely to cause anxiety. This matters more than any strain name.

Then read the terpenes

Dominant terpenes shape the character. As a rough guide: myrcene-heavy profiles lean relaxing, limonene-heavy lean bright and uplifting, pinene is associated with alertness, and linalool with calm. These are tendencies, not rules.

This is where aroma becomes useful: what a plant smells like hints at its terpene profile.

Respect the dose

THC is biphasic: a low dose can relax while a high dose does the opposite. Choosing “the right strain” and then overshooting the dose undoes the choice. Start low, especially with edibles.

Chemotype sets the direction; dose sets the intensity. Both matter more than the name on the jar.

A practical order

1. Cannabinoid ratio
THC:CBD baseline
2. Dominant terpenes
Character (myrcene, limonene…)
3. Dose
