Beta-Caryophyllene

TERPENE

PepperyBinds CB2

Beta-caryophyllene is unique: it is a terpene that also acts like a cannabinoid. The peppery, spicy note in cannabis, black pepper and cloves, beta-caryophyllene stands out because it binds directly to the body’s CB2 cannabinoid receptor, blurring the line between terpene and cannabinoid.

Aroma and character

Beta-caryophyllene is warm and spicy, black pepper, cloves and a hint of wood or cinnamon. It gives many chemovars their peppery bite.

Why it is special

Unlike other terpenes, beta-caryophyllene is a dietary cannabinoid: it binds the CB2 receptor of the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in inflammation and immune response. This makes it the terpene with the clearest direct link to the cannabinoid system.

What research suggests

Because of its CB2 activity, beta-caryophyllene has been studied for anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in preclinical models. It is also a common, food-safe flavouring. Human cannabis-specific evidence remains limited.
